Do You Need A College/University Degree To Get A Programming Job?

Do You Need A College/University Degree To Get A Programming Job?

In my Programming Career Guide I have a section where I point out that you don’t need a College or University Computer Science (CS) degree to get a programming job.

Firstly, having a CS degree does not necessarily make you a better programmer.

I’ve met and worked with a large group of developers over the years, some with CS degrees, some without. I never found a pattern to identify a better programmer based
purely on a CS degree.

In my experience and opinion, having a CS degree does not guarantee you will be a better programmer, compared to someone without a degree.

Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg are just two examples of programmers who have achieved great success without a CS degree. Mark went back and completed his degree at Harvard in 2016, and Bill received
an honorary doctorate degree in 2007 – thirty years after he left Harvard.

While they do now have degrees, I think you would agree that they achieved a lot in their careers without one.

Secondly, having been in numerous interviews as both an interviewer and interviewee, the question about education qualifications has nowhere near as much weight as what
skills and experience you are bringing to the table.

If you can demonstrate excellent skills in software development, that’s going to give you a big advantage compared to someone holding a CS degree without any practical
experience.

After all, you are being hired for what you can do for the company, not for the piece of paper with your qualifications written on it.

With that said, I need to mention that if you are up against someone with a CS degree and practical experience, and you don’t have a CS degree, then all else being equal you
may find the other person might be the preferred applicant for the position.

There needs to be a way to separate applicants for a job, right?

Also, you may come across companies that insist on the applicant have a CS degree, but that’s getting rarer and rarer these days, and with good reason.

Ignoring any applicant without a CS degree seems to be an excellent way to miss out on a large pool of great programmers.

Over the past 35+ years, I’ve seen numerous people without degrees get jobs as software developers. In almost all cases it was because of the skills and practical
experience they bought to the table that got them the position.

Google and Apple Drop Degree Requirements for Programmers!

Yes, Google and Apple as well as IBM are three huge companies that no longer require you to have a degree to work with them.  Now, thats not to say getting a job with them will be easy.  You will start have to prove yourself and the interview process is aimed at eliminating all but the best programmers.  But the point is, you don’t need a CS degree now.

And a lot of other companies are following suit – if you can demonstrate skills as a software developer, you can get yourself a job, even if you don’t have a computer science degree.

Developer Surveys

In Stack Overflows 2017 Developer Survey, which had over 64,000 responses, thirty two (32) percent of programmers said that their formal education was not very important or not important at all to their career success.  The survey also showed that 90% of programmers overall considered themselves at least somewhat self-taught.   This is a pretty huge statement in my opinion.

The survey went on to say that computer science majors and computer engineering majors were the most likely (49.4%) to say their formal education was important or very important.

That is interesting, right?  What seems pretty clear here is that things are changing.  About ten years ago, it was almost mandatory to have a degree.  Now things are changing rapidly.  Gaining a CS degree is no longer the holy grail because companies are no longer making them mandatory to have to work with them.   It’s completely possibly to get a job as a programmer without obtaining one.

What should you focus on?

It makes sense to become multi-skilled as a programmer.  If you know several programming languages, and/or frameworks, and are able to demonstrate competency in them, then your career opportunities will likely improve dramatically as a result.

It makes sense to focus on core languages widely used such as Java, Python, C++, C and so on. As well as technologies like Java Enterprise Edition and the Spring framework to name just a few.

Of course there are other factors in choosing a programming language so keep that in mind.

The bottom line is if you have excellent software development skills, and can demonstrate them, then it doesn’t matter if you have a degree or not.

So, start working on those software development skills today!

Asus T300L "Press F12 to clear the TPM" or "Press ESC to reject this change request and continue"

Hi guys. I have been dealing problem with my Asus T300L Transformer laptop.
It came with Win8 and after a while computer upgraded to the Windows 10
My wife had been using it for school purpose and we were happy with laptop.
Until my told me to backup her files and reinstall computer.
I am computer expert with almost about 20 years computer experience.
However, trusting with latest OS partition that comes with laptop, I didnt create OS usb etc.
When I fully saved her files to the external hdd, I went through factory resetting.
But clicking Next and Next and Next was to fast but I didnt realize one of the question.
Saying that if you have upgraded to Win10, you have take care encryption or something like that.
Then I saw below message on the screen.

"A configuration change was requested to clear this computer's TPM (Trusted Platform Module)
WARNING: Clearing erases information stored on the TPM. You will lose all created keys and access to data encrypted by those keys.
Press F12 to clear the TPM
Press ESC to reject this change request and continue"

It was lovely message and I read this time carefully. I said well its ok for me to hit f12 or ESC.
Yes as you thought, none of them worked. Plus, no other keys worked.
I went over google and searched to see if anyone had same problem.
There were bunch of people who has same issue and there were different kind of solution.
Unfortunately those solutions were unsuccessful. Keyboard still did not respond.
Pressing volume up key and power button didnt work. No need to try.
I tried to use wireless keyboard, still didnt work. Tried usb keyboard, no luck. Created bios file on usb flash card and connected usb and restarted, computer didnt see usb. Used Asus live chat thinking some expert will help me, there is no expert there.
After 3rd day, I was going to trash it and buy new laptop but wanted to call Asus and ask help.
Anthony on the phone tried to help me honestly but no luck.
I went over with the solution volume up key and press button.
Then he wanted me to over discharge or something like that.
To do that, I needed to press power key more then 60 sec but still didnt work.
I said what do I do? He said I have to ship item to Asus, then they will check it.
Asked him how much I will pay, he said Asus will tell me how much after they diagnose item.
As you know, when you send item, you need to say goodbye to your laptop for about 2 weeks or so.
Decided that Im not going to ship my laptop there without knowing how much I will be charged.
He said Asus will tell me how much before repairing. If I say no, they will send back without repair.
Replied that I still said Im not going to send my laptop and asked better expert who could help.
No luck, I asked where is shipment place. He said California. (Im located in PA. So maybe 4 weeks)
Later I asked "doesnt this Asus have any local repair place? He checked and said yes there is in NY.
He emailed me information and stated RMA saying walk in repair. Told me to just call them and ask help.
Mr Indian friend told me they dont deal with the transformers laptop.
Then notice someone was saying from reddit (User syus5) remove ssd and put back after bios screen.
guys i had the same problem... I found a solution on my ASUS t300la... what i did was force it into bios by removing the hard drive. once i booted it it automatically recognized the keyboard! i did f12 and then put the hard drive back it. it worked like a charm! good luck!
I tried to search how to remove Asus T300L ssd but almost there is no information on whole internet.
Even Asus Manual for this model doenst show how to remove/replace ssd.
Thanks god there is only one person who shows how to open back cover (you dont even need screwdriver)

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/ASUS+T300LA-US51T+SSD+replacement/27863

When you follow this link, skip Step 2 because you dont need to remove battery and go to the Step 3
Its very easy to remove SSD, then turn on laptop, wait for the bios screen, you can turn off pc.
Then place back ssd, then turn on again. Thanks God it came back.

User syus5 from reddit, Thank you.
Sasa Macura from ifixit.com. Thank you.
Asus, who tried to rip me off, shame on you. Hire somone who can help your laptop users.
Readers who got time to read my post. Thanks all.
Users who suffer with same problem, thumbs up if this post solve your problem.

Here some others who have same issue.

Cocugun Pesinden Kosan Polis

http://www.samanyoluhaber.com/gundem/Sosyal-medyayi-sallayan-fotografin-sirri/870144/

Bu fotoğraf karesiyle İçişleri Bakanı İdris Naim Şahin'in Ankara'daki izinsiz Cumhuriyet bayramı yürüyüşüne yapılan polis müdahalesini helikopterden izlediği öne sürülüyordu. Fotoğrafa ek olarak da alanda yapılan polis müdahalesinin görüntüleri verildi.

Bakan Şahin'in olayları havadan izlediği bilgisi doğruydu.

Siz, "Aman annane be, boş versene" *deyip, marketten hazır çorba alıyordunuz ya... Annane rahmetli oldu ve siz, o tarhananın tarifini

*
Ne verirlerse.. .
Onu yiyeceksiniz.

Yoğurdu çırpıp, ayran yapamıyor, ayran...
İşte o nedenle, kızınız, genetiği değiştirilmiş meşrubat içmeye mahkum

Size zor geliyor ama, zor mu evde yoğurt yapmak?

Ben iddia ediyorum...
Kaşla göz arasında frankeştayn ürünlere kapıları açan arkadaşlarla,
Amerikan çiftçilerinin avukatı profesörlerimiz, sırf karakovan balına
sahip çıksa, Şemdinli''de, Pervari''de terör bile azalır, terör bile.
*
Uzatmayayım.

Mutfak genetiğimizi kaybettik biz.
*
Elin adamı, mısırdan, soyadan, domatesten önce beynimizin DNA''sını değiştirdi!
*
Hurrraaa diye köyden kente göçerken, dışarda tıkınmayı şehirleşme

Dolayısıyla, ya kafayı değiştirip, özümüze döneceğiz...
*Ya da ne verirlerse onu yiyeceğiz.
